OAK LEAF A.B.C "FRIDAY FIGHT NIGHT AT THE TOWER HOTEL"

First up was an exhibition between Francie Stokes (oak leaf) and gerard loughran (scorpion)both only 9 years old, young francie had the crowd howling for more with his quick-fire punching, he showed maturity way beyond his age. Next up was Josh Gallagher (oak leaf) against Pat Hegarty (kildress), this was a hard fought battle, in which Gallagher edged it. Darren Quigley (oak leaf) v Darragh Mullan (st canices) was third on the programme this was a real battle in which mullan received a standing eight count after a strong right cross from quigley in the first round, but mullan came back in the second and landed a couple of hard shots and forced quigley to take an eight count, both fought hard in the third but quigley just edged the decision.Thomas Long and Eugene o'kane, both of oak leaf then produced an exhibition of good quality boxing. Raymond Rogan (oak leaf) was up next against Darren McGuigan (springhill) and rogan was not hanging about as he came out for the first round firing a flurry of combinations and forced mcguigan to take an eight count, he survived to the end of the round. But rogan again came out for the second round in ruthless fashion and forced another eight count at this point the referee called a halt to the contest, a very impressive victory for rogan. Christy Lavey (oak leaf) against Kieran O'Kane (st canices) was the sixth contest, Lavey started well, but got caught with a couple of hard shot and the referee called a halt to the contest. Graeme Doherty (oak leaf) v Patrick Heron (springhill) finished of the first half and this was a real ding-dong middleweight contest that had the crowd on the edge of their seats and finished 17-16 to Doherty.

The second half started with Michael "chucky" Gillespie (oak leaf) against Joel Scullion (all saints) this battle was fought at a frantic pace for three rounds with gillespie just that bit sharper and took the decision. An all creggan affair was next up with two good friends John O'Brien (oak leaf) and Marty Edgar (st mary's) pitting their wits against each other, with edgar taking the decision in what was a thrilling encounter. Next up was a rematch between Aaron Rogan (oak leaf) and Sean McGeown (kildress), with theses two both winning one match each in the past, this was something of a decider. And by the way "wee rogie" came out for the first bell he was in no mood to lose, indeed he was throwing fast combinations to the body and head, half way through landing a crisp right hand to the body he hurt mcgeown badly, so much so that he could not beat the count leaving rogan with his first stoppage win. Declan "smudger" Smith (oak leaf) was next up and he faced the very experienced Paddy McKenna (kildress)this was a hard-hitting light heavyweight contest in which both men landed some big shots, with mckenna just edging the decision. The second last fight of the evening was between two old foes Gearoid McGilloway (oak leaf) and Mark Treacey (kildress). This was a very technical display from both boxers with mcgilloway showing some composure to pick his punches well and come away with a comfortable win, just before the Ulster Intermediate Championships.

Top of the bill was a local lightweight contest between Gavin Moore (oak leaf) and James O'Donnell (glenside), this clash lived up to expectations and had the whole crowd on their feet, with Moore giving possibly his best display yet, he was throwing some great combinations with speed and accuracy, indeed forcing o'donnell into a mandatory eight count in the second, before going on to win 20 - 10 against the very tough o'donnell.

Oak Leaf would like to thank all those involved in helping with the event and also the tower hotel for their patience on the night. We look forward to the next show.
